Urgent Treatment Centre at Crawley Hospital transformed.

An £8 million pound project to transform urgent care at Crawley Hospital is now complete.

The final stage of the work was the refurbishment and upgrade of the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), a vital part of NHS Crawley Clinical Commissioning Group’s plan to provide care closer to home.

The upgrade of the UTC includes:

· A larger, modern adult waiting area

· An open plan reception desk to improve communications

· Separate waiting areas for young children and for teenagers, to give greater privacy

· A baby change room in the children’s waiting area

· Two sets of doors to improve access

· A drop down point at the reception desk for wheelchair users

The UTC, run by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT), remained operational throughout the six month development. The transformation was intended to improve patient experience by providing modern, airy and colourful facilities.

A celebratory event was held on Thursday (3 August), to mark the end of the work and showcase the new centre.

The UTC is a walk-in service, open 24/7 365 days a year which treats injuries or illnesses that are urgent but not life threatening, e.g. chest infections, sprains and strains, broken bones, minor burns and scalds, minor head and eye injuries, bites and stings. There is also a primary care walk-in service open 8am till 8pm every day.

Dr Laura Hill, Clinical Director, at NHS Crawley Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “I am delighted that by working together, NHS Crawley CCG and our partners have transformed the Urgent Treatment Centre at Crawley Hospital. Not only will the refurbishment improve services for patients and mean they can receive high quality care closer to home, but it will help reduce the strain on local A&E services”.

Dr Ali Al-Batran, Clinical Director for Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is positive news for Crawley and the local surrounding communities, for the hospital and for our staff. These improvements made at the Urgent Treatment Centre will improve patient experience. We provide a range of urgent but non-life threatening treatments in a modern facility.”

A new secure and relaxing area has been created for mental health patients.

The Urgent Treatment Centre works form the final part of a wider project to transform urgent care, including a new ward, Piper, for those who need care but are not so unwell they need to be in an acute hospital. The improvements also include an expanded Clinical Assessment Unit, a referral only service which provides rapid assessment and treatment for a number of conditions which do not need admission to an acute hospital.
