Residents warning after huge tree almost crushes walkers in Tilgate Forest

Walkers are being advised to take care while walking through Tilgate Forest following the deluge of snow last night and this morning.

The warning has come from three walkers who were almost crushed by a huge tree as they walked through Tilgate Forest earlier today.

A photo taken at the scene by one of the walkers shows the size of the enormous tree after it came crashing just seconds after the walkers passed by it.

The incident happened just after lunchtime today (8th Feb) along one of the public footpaths within the forest.

Commenting on the incident, one of the walkers said:

“I was walking along when I heard a huge crash, I spun round to see the tree had fallen down. I ran back as I knew someone had been walking not far behind me, half expecting them to trapped underneath. Luckily it had just missed them, it was a miracle.”

The other walker was shaken up very badly having had to run away with his dog from the falling tree.

Crawley Council have been contacted about the incident and a statement is expected shortly.
