Raids take place across Worthing to stop illegal trade

A clampdown on the illicit tobacco trade took place across several properties in Worthing last Tuesday.

West Sussex Trading Standards, along with Sussex Police and Canine sniffer dogs (Scamp, Phoebe and YoYo) seized a vehicle, around 6,000 illicit cigarettes, 7.55kg of tobacco and more than £3,000 in cash.

Following a tip-off, Trading Standards officers also executed a warrant at a property being used as a storehouse for several local shops. Officers seized 5,000 illegal cigarettes and 5.5kg illicit tobacco, along with paperwork which linked the property to other known suspects. The tenant of the property has already being prosecuted twice before for illegal tobacco offences.

An unidentified male entered the storehouse, but fled once he saw the Trading Standards officers. An empty holdall was found outside the property, which sniffer dog Scamp indicated had been used to store tobacco.

Hidden counterfeit cigarettes, which have now been seized

A Worthing town center shop was also raided following information from Sussex Police, and two further warrants were issued for separate addresses.

David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Resident Services, said “Selling illegal tobacco is a crime, and one that brings great detriment to our county. It takes away from legitimate businesses and harms consumers.”

“We will continue to clampdown on this illegal trade and prosecute all those involved.”

Richard Sargeant, Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “The counterfeit products are extremely dangerous as they do not self-extinguish, which has led to house fires.”

“I urge anyone with information about this illegal trade to contact Trading Standards.”
