M23 opens up with new fourth lane, but speed limit remains

Some thought the day would never come but the full reopening of the M23 looks to be fast approaching.

Engineers have now opened the fourth lane of the carriageway in both directions on the M23 from Jnc 8 at the M25 down to Jnc 10 at Crawley.

Of course the majority of people will not able to use it at the moment as most of us have to stay at home, but it’s good to know that despite the coronavirus crisis some transportation networks may be completed.

But despite the lanes opening a speed restriction of 50mph remains in place and will do for several weeks yet as cameras and other tech is installed and tested.

As there is still a lot of work to be done on the motorway before it is classed as a ‘smart motorway’ and there are restrictions, a free recovery service is still in operation.

Completion is expected within the next two months.
