Local school children discover the world of STEM at Crawley College

Hundreds of children discovered the joys of STEM during two special days, organised by Crawley College.

On Friday 17 May, more than 300 children from local schools visited the college for a series of sensational STEM sessions – giving them fun, hands on activities, all designed to inspire future generations to the opportunities STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects can bring.

They were able to test their imagination – and their skills – by solving codes to win prizes, experience virtual reality and get handy with tyre changing.

They even had an opportunity to see various items, including water fleas and flowers, through the lens of a microscope!

And on Saturday, around 500 people visited the campus for ‘STEM at the College’ – which was part of Crawley’s STEMfest activities.

They visited the college’s engineering and technology blocks, and enjoyed getting involved in the fun too.

Vicki Illingworth, Principal at Crawley College, said:

“We had two fantastic days, welcoming families and visitors of all ages to the college.

“We were bowled over by the success of our STEM events and the feedback we have received was overwhelmingly positive, which is a huge credit to the hard work and dedication of our staff and students.

“On Saturday, we even saw some of the children who had visited the day before return to enjoy more fun and show their mums and dads what it was all about!

“It is fantastic to see the college bustling with activity and playing such an important role in the community.”

The STEM Sessions and STEM at the College followed on from a successful celebration of the work of 51 engineering students, who showcased their talent at the college’s 10th annual Higher National Engineering Project Exhibition on Thursday 16 May.

Crawley students put a literary spin on their ‘lockdown’ life

Crawley College students have been putting a literary spin on their lockdown life.

Last month, the Maths & English team dared their students to enter a college-wide ‘LockDown WriteUp’ challenge.

Students studying GCSE English or Functional Skills were invited to write 250 words, either fact or fiction, about the lockdown experience and they certainly didn’t disappoint.

Around 50 stories came in, with a selection of them chosen to appear on the college website. Amazon vouchers were  also up for grabs as prizes for stories that impressed staff the most.

David Towsey, Head of Learning for English & Maths, at Crawley College, said:

“We were delighted with the response from our students. Many of the entries came from our GCSE English students, which – for me – makes their accomplishments all the greater as many of them previously had less confidence in their writing ability.

“The aim of the competition was to provide an opportunity for us to share our stories in this unique time, and to make people smile and feel more connected to each other and to their college community.

“The variety of entries was fantastic, and it was inspiring to see how the students really tapped into their imagination and left us wanting more – the aim of all good storytellers!

“We’re proud to share just a small snapshot of these on the website, and hope people enjoy reading them as much as we have.”
