As the Liberal Democrat candidate for Crawley, I’m campaigning for change. I’m campaigning for better.

I know people are fed up of Brexit chaos. It’s a national embarrassment. The Conservative Government’s own analysis says that in a Brexit deal like Boris Johnson’s, each person will be up to £2,250 a year poorer. It’s one of many reasons why I want to Stop Brexit.

I met with the Heads of GP’s Local Medical Committee, the Surrey and Sussex British Medical Association and Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust. In Crawley, patient experiences of getting a GP appointment fall below the National Average.  The NHS and social care services are in a state of crisis. That is not because of any failings by the outstanding health workers who serve us tirelessly; it’s because the system has tied one hand behind their backs.

Headteachers and Teachers in Crawley tell me that funding cuts mean less Teachers, less Teaching Assistants, less money and more students.  They are stretched to breaking point. One teacher told me that she buys energy bars from her own money for her pupils because they are hungry and school supplies, including pens because they have none.

In discussions with a Senior Sussex Police Officer, I was told that Sussex Police have seen hundreds of police officers cut in recent years forcing them into uncomfortable policing decisions. Since 2015, Conservative cuts have taken 7,500 frontline officers and 2,800 community support officers off the streets. In Crawley Town Centre, in the last year, 75% of offences resulted in no further action being taken.  Police officers joined the Police to serve our country. It has been made far too difficult for them to do what they desperately want to do.

Charities in Crawley are struggling to deal with complex long-term and hidden homelessness. Partly, that’s because of an absence of single point accountability and no implementation of the ‘Housing First’ model.  During one homeless feeding session, I saw some 45 desperate people in one night being fed by the charity, Giving Back Crawley.

If the Liberal Democrats are elected, we will stop the chaos of Brexit.  That will grow our economy and give us £50billion more over the next five years to invest in schools, the Health Service and tackling inequality.  Our police are overstretched, and I know you want more visible police officers.

If elected, I will make sure that we recruit at least two extra police officers per ward in Crawley. For our environment, we will seek investment in more plastic recycling programmes and electric vehicle charging stations in Crawley. And to address homelessness, we will implement the successful ‘Housing First’ model.

This is the most important election of our time. It will define our future for generations. The Labour and the Conservatives have swapped control of Crawley since 1983. It is time for change. It is time for you to demand better. It is time for the LIBERAL DEMOCRATS.  Vote YOUSUF on 12 December. Ask me anything on @KhalilYousuf or LibDemsCrawley@gmail.com

I am standing as the Green Party candidate in Crawley, in the 2019 General Election.

So, why should you vote for me?

I joined the Green Party about 30 years ago because I wanted to make a difference and that difference was to put the environment and people before money making and profit as the main priority in everything we do. The Green Party offered that opportunity to me to try and bring that difference about.

Even when I joined the Greens, scientists for many years had been telling and informing UK governments amongst others around the world that a Climate Crisis is coming if we do not make serious changes. We needed to cut carbon emissions, stop using fossil fuels and replace them with renewable sources, use electric transport, change our agricultural and industrial practices and methods, think about how we dispose of the waste and pollution we create – plastic being just one example amongst many other things.

I am also appalled by the inequalities and injustices in our society and economy. In the 5th richest country in the world, why do we have 14 million people in poverty, homelessness, food banks, low wages, a huge gap between rich and poor?

Why is it we can’t afford money for the NHS, schools, social housing, police, decent wages but we can afford tax cuts for the rich and big business, wasteful projects like HS2, Trident, Hinkley Point nuclear power station and other such things.

We need to change this by ending austerity, paying people a living wage, ending zero hour contracts, properly fund vital services like the NHS, schools, social housing, etc.

A vote for me, is a vote to change this, a vote to massively alter our political system and to make you and the future generations the heart of our decision making.

Tens and hundreds of thousands in the UK and maybe millions of young people and others, around the world in groups such as Extinction Rebellion, are already becoming very aware that changes have to be made.

Businesses are now falling over themselves to announce how environmentally friendly they are – supermarkets are saying they are getting rid of plastic packaging, car manufacturers switching to electric car manufacture and so on.

It is within our reach, to make changes. We have the resources, technology and money. All we lack is the political will to bring this about. Capitalism and consumerism are not set in stone, they can be un-invented or better still adapted, so that it actually puts the needs of people and the environment first, before profits.

As your Green MP, I’ll add political will alongside other Green MPs to bring about these changes. I will ensure that we push for a green revolution where all new policies have the environment at the heart of their conception and implementation.

A vote for the Green Party is a vote for our future generations and those that cannot vote.

Vote Green 2019.
