I often receive messages from Crawley residents – those who voted Leave, and those who voted Remain – who tell me that we need to end the Brexit uncertainty and leave the European Union without delay.

The likes of Jeremy Corbyn, and other leftist party leaders such as Jo Swinson and Nicola Sturgeon, seek to prolong the uncertainty, by delaying or even stopping Brexit, which would cost the UK roughly £1 billion a month net in EU membership.

Their Surrender Bill seeks to require the Prime Minister to ‘immediately’ accept any Brexit delay sought by the EU, irrespective of conditions that may be imposed.

As Parliament is blocking the Prime Minister’s promise to the nation to take Britain out by 31st October, the only solution is a general election – which is also being blocked by the opposition out of fear of what the people will say.

While they seek to overturn the will of the people, this week in Parliament I joined the Prime Minister in the House of Commons division lobby to vote for an early election to get Brexit done.

Last week I also questioned the Education Secretary about the increase to school funding, and asked the Health & Social Care Secretary about innovative genomic medicine which will benefit cancer patients in the decade ahead.

I additionally raised the importance of ensuring that the extra cash for frontline NHS services results in enhanced GP provision and reduced waiting times.

As well as this, I led and secured a parliamentary debate calling for greater involvement of patients in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare.

There is huge potential for AI to transform the lives of those living with heart and circulatory diseases, including some 11,000 people in Crawley. It is vital that those affected are included fully in discussions about the development and adoption of these new technologies.

Henry Smith: ‘The choice is clear this General Election’

In his article this week Henry Smith puts forward his case of why Crawley should vote for him.

Whilst I’ve been out and about across Crawley in recent weeks, much has been said in the national press about the General Election campaign currently taking place.

Perhaps the most striking was the news that two former Labour MPs are not only opposing Jeremy Corbyn, but are instead backing Boris Johnson to be Prime Minister.

This somewhat reflects a number of conversations I’ve been having on the doorstep with former Labour voters in Crawley. Hard-working and patriotic people who know that their values are not represented by Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell and Diane Abbott.

This is best represented on Brexit. We had a referendum three and a half years ago and the people of Crawley and our country voted to Leave. I led the Leave campaign in Crawley in 2016 and have continued to vote and voice in the House of Commons to ensure our EU exit.

On day one of the new parliament after the election, Boris Johnson has confirmed the House of Commons will start work to ensure Brexit finally takes place within weeks, almost before the Christmas turkey has gone cold!

In contrast, Labour’s offer is more dither, more delay and more division, without actually knowing what to do.

As part of a majority Conservative Government I will carry out Crawley’s vote to leave the EU without further delay; ensuring we take back control of our laws, borders and trade, whilst building on new opportunities across the world. This is not just about the UK’s independent sovereign future but respect for our democracy.

The choice is clear on 12th December. A vote for the Conservatives is a vote to get Brexit done and invest responsibly in our public services. A vote for any other candidate lets in Labour and their reckless plans, risking skyrocketing spending and higher taxes for hard-working Crawley families.

Only the Conservatives can get Brexit done and get on with our project of sensible moderate, but tax-cutting, one nation conservatism, spreading opportunity and hope across the whole UK.

Let us unleash the potential of this country and take Great Britain forward.
