‘Don’t leave Gatwick’ Crawley MP writes to British Airways after reports they may pull out

British Airways p;anes lined up at Gatwick Airport

Crawley MP Henry Smith has written a letter to British Airways CEO over concerns around reports the airline may be thinking of pulling out of Gatwick Airport.

Speaking to CN24 Mr Smith said:

“I am concerned about reports that they are going to withdraw if true. We all appreciate the industry is going though the worst shock in living memory but I will contuinue to lobby government to ensure there is support for the travel sectors.

If we can bridge this initial period then business will come back, maybe slowly but ultimately strong.”

Mr Smith added:

“I’ve asked the company to consider the wellbeing of BA staff to make sure that they do everything they can to furlough those staff rather than making them redundant.”

It all comes after BA annoucned it was looking at cutting up to 12,000 jobs while some unconfirmed reports suggested that they may consider stopping operations at the countries second busiest airport.

Gatwick Fire Service to run marathon on airports runway for charity

It will consist of running 13 lengths of the 3.3km main runway, but WHite Watch Gatwick Fire Service hope to raise money for local hospital charity (SASH).

Taking place on Sunday 14th June, the crew will be running the 13 lengths as a relay, with the final distance being just over that of a marathon.

Taking advantage of the lack of flow during periods of the day, they will use those opportunities to ‘do something different and raise awareness for our local NHS staff putting themselves on the line every day during this pandemic’.

The money will help the staff at East Surrey Hospital and Surrey & Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust during the Covid 19 situation.
