Cold weather alert issued for Crawley and West Sussex

The Met office has warned that temperatures are expected to drop below freezing for the next few days.

The alert was issued yesterday and continues until Friday 02 December, afterwards the temperatures are expected to mildly rise.

Prolonged periods of cold weather can be dangerous, especially for the very young, very old or those with chronic diseases, as the cold can affect their health. Ice on the roads and pavements can also lead to accidents and injury.

Christine Field, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: “The Met Office is warning us it is going to be a lot colder over the next few days.

“We would urge older people, families with very young children and those with chronic illnesses to take extra care during the cold snap.

“We would also encourage residents to take a few minutes to think about how this cold snap might affect older relatives and neighbours. If you can look in on them and make sure they are keeping warm and well. By checking on them, checking that their house is warm, or picking up essentials like food or medicine, you could really make a difference.”

The county council is also reminding people that they are eliblie for a free Flu vaccine, and should consider having this done before winter sets in.
