Labour council’s delight as Central Sussex College development progresses

The new development brings a promise of 98 council homes for Crawley residents.

The hoardings have gone up at the Northgate Avenue development adjacent to Central Sussex College as a new block of council homes is delivered. Developers are now at work building the foundations for the new council homes which will be rented to new tenants on Crawley Borough Council’s waiting list.

When the flats are delivered in 2020 the Labour-run council will be able to offer 98 households a new home, the equivalent to wiping nearly 5% off the entire list of households currently on the housing waiting list.

• The homes will be allocated to households on the waiting list in the priority bandings, and the council has a policy of a five year “local connection”, which means people living longer in the Borough, and their families, have a better chance of getting housed.

• The homes form part of ambitious plans by the Labour administration at Crawley Borough Council to deliver over a thousand new council homes for people across in the borough over the next few years.

Welcoming the progress made, Labour Cabinet Member for Housing Michael Jones (Bewbush) said:

“I am absolutely delighted that work is progressing on the new development at the Central Sussex College site.

“These will be high quality homes for people on our local housing register, and a big step forward in making a reality this Labour council’s ambition to deliver over a thousand new council homes for people here in the borough over the next few years. As with all developments it will take time for these to be built, with a finish date of approximately April 2020.

“There are over 2000 households currently on our waiting list. Homes like this will make all the difference, and the Labour leadership at Crawley Borough Council is determined to deliver the housing they need as much as we possibly can.”

Supporting Cllr Jones’ comments Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Development Peter Smith (Lab, Ifield), whose portfolio includes responsibility for town centre development, added:

“This latest investment in Crawley’s town centre by our Labour run council shows our continuing commitment to invest in Crawley to provide homes for our people and jobs in our economy. Only a Labour run council has the ambition, vision and energy to do this on behalf of our residents and businesses.”
